A Little Peace and Quiet! . . . for now

Apr 04, 2007 @ 03:10 pm by Dr. Bruce Spitzer

The Federal Communications Commission today voted to continue banning cell phone use on airline flights!  Hooray for the quiet folks . . . I cannot imagine enduring a 2 or 3 hour flight having to listen to someone talking on their cell phone.

I once took Amtrak from Tampa to Orlando, Florida, and had to listen to a woman speaking on her cell phone the entire two hour trip.  It was nothing short of maddening!

Click here for CNN’s story on the ban and FCC vote.

Note though, that the FCC reserves the right to revisit the ban in the future if additional technical information becomes available. . . . so it’s peace and quiet . . . . for now.

  1. I think it would be annoying to listen to somebody talk on their phone the entire flight. It’s probably a good thing cell phones aren’t allowed.

  2. Good!! I can’t stand listening to people talk on their cell phones either on airplane flights. Being in an enclosed area like that for hours at a time is already bad enough! Definitely hooray for peace and quiet!

  3. If I had to listen to someone talk on their phone for an entire trip, I would have gone insane. Thankfully I always have my iPod and headphones on me so I could have drowned her out, but I think the issue here is etiquette. So many people stop taking other people into consideration because they want to feel important. Suddenly having a cell phone makes someone important, so important, that you are forced to listen to their innate chatter about something that was not important to begin with. I could understand cell phone use in emergency situations on an airplane, but to chatter for an entire trip is ridiculous. Let’s hope peace and quiet stays this way.

  4. I get really annoyed when people are talking on cell phones in public places. Not everyone wants to hear their conversation. I used to work at a local deli and I would have people come up to the counter talking on their cell phone and expect me to what on them. I didn’t even greet them until they hung up.

  5. Good for the FCC. It is about time action is taken on people who do not have enough respect for other people when in close quarters such as a plane or a train. People don’t care (most people) about the personal life of strangers.

  6. I hate people who use cell phones in public places too. I especially hate when they talk so loud, as if you want to know their business. I have my own problems I don’t care what is happenning in your life!!

  7. I also hate when people are on their phone and you are trying to talk to them, like my job. Its very annoying when you are trying to take someone’s order and they are on your phone, because they just ignore you or nod their head. I can just imagine how horrible it was to listen to that lady for two hours.

  8. I hate it when anyone uses a cell phone in public places. This cell phone ban seems like a great idea to me.
At the store I where I work people are always walking around with their “bluetooth” headpieces gabbing away at what seems to be air. It’s fustrating when they walk up next to you and start talking and you turn around and say “Excuse me?” and they look at you like you just invaded a very intimate conversation.

  9. I agree I especially hate it when I’m in line at a store and someone is to busy talking on there cell phone and not paying any attention to the casher and holding up the line.

  10. I both argee and disaggree, only because I have been stuck in one of those situations that all I could do was think about who I need to talk to and what I needed to get done. Unfortunately, there are those people that do not have the tact to soften their voice or make calls for emergencies only. But, that is the typical of us Americans – selfish and rude (yes, we know that is the truth).
